D1 No chance for the rook

Even if the king is not in the corner, he can be threatened with mate, as shown in D2 left:

1.Qd5-a8+ Rc7-a7 2.Qa8-c6#.

If there are more pieces involved, the number of possibilities grows further. In D2 right, 1.Rd8xb8+ Ka8xb8 2.Qd5-d8# wins.

D2 The rook blocks the escape route

Mate with Queen + Bishop

We have already learned a large range of mating possibilities with Queen and Bishop – when we looked at the Mate with Two Bishops!

The queen can always take on the role of the second bishop and, even more than that, with the help of her rook function she can block other escape squares as well. We will not delve deeper into these mating patterns here and only keep in mind that the queen can be more than a substitute for the second bishop.

Our diagrams alongside partly show mating pictures that are also familiar to beginners. Many games end with mate on the square g7 (D1, D2).
